In the past I have used a hand chisel, since I felt I had more control than with a router but it usually gave me ugly cuts and took a lot of time. This template makes hinge installation essentially error free and can work with essentially any door thickness. This package is a one-stop shop: all you need is a router and you are on your way, since it comes with a router bit and a self-centering drill bit for the screw holes. The built in router bit depth gauge and the on board storage for all the pieces is a great touch. Excellent template/jig for a task I used to hate; highly recommended. Sure they are not as solid (being made of plastic vs metal) as some of the professional templates, but they are adequate for DIYers or even contractors that need to hang the occasional door. This template allows you to quickly cut different size hinges with radius or square corners (you will need to use a chisel to cut out square corners) using the included router bit. TIP: use a trim router if possible because it is much easier to handle and less like to accidentally chew up the template than a full size router.
