One of the main reasons why cooling units fail is because they begin to rust, components deteriorate, and ammonia begins to leak out. Also, if your RV cooling unit has run off level, the boiler will overheat, thereby causing a breakdown of the ammonia and its additive potassium chromatic forming a blockage.

If your RV Cooling Units – RV Refrigerator is not cooling right or stopped cooling and smells of ammonia. If so, the cooling unit has failed and needs to be replaced with one of the best-made cooling units for RVs.

Several DIY online videos suggest that if your Frig is not working on AC and you have check the power supply, the glass fuses and heating element, than its likely that the lower control board is bad. So I went this route and purchase a new lower control board, but unfortunately it did not solve the problem. I was fortunate that Amazon allow this item to be returned for a refund. I was pretty much resigned to running the frig off LP gas until I learned that the upper control board could cause this issue. So I purchased a upper control board and it solved the problem. My frig now runs off of AC or gas, depending on if the AC is available. Therefore, if you are have a similar problem with your RV refrigerator, know that replacing the upper control board may solved your problem.

Perform preventive maintenance
As with any piece of equipment, inspection and maintenance of your RV refrigerator are important for performance and longevity. We recommend the following:

Keep an eye on the evaporator inside your refrigerator. If ice starts to cover the fins, defrost your refrigerator or simply take a hair dryer and melt the ice.
Don’t let your freezer become an ice block. We know it’s an easy thing to put off, but defrost it whenever necessary. Plus you’ll have more space once it’s done!
Check the outside condenser coil and propane components at least once a year, especially if you haven’t used your refrigerator in awhile or if you’re experiencing problems. Remove the outside vent and check for any dust, cobwebs, nests, or general debris. If necessary, use compressed air to blow it clean or simply brush or wipe it clean.
